An electrical checklist to complete before remodel walls close

Electrical decisions are easiest to coordinate while framing and wall cavities are accessible. Planning lighting, controls, appliance loads, devices, panel capacity, and future pathways before drywall protects the finished design and reduces avoidable rework.

1. Start with the finished room, not the existing wiring

Document how each room will be used, where furniture and cabinetry will sit, which surfaces need task lighting, and what equipment will be installed. A technically functional layout can still be frustrating if receptacles land behind cabinets, switches conflict with doors, or the person using a counter casts a shadow over the work surface.

Share floor plans, cabinet elevations, appliance information, reflected ceiling plans, and fixture selections as early as they are available. Changes are normal during design, but the electrical plan should follow the latest coordinated documents.

2. Confirm appliance and equipment requirements

Cooking equipment, heating and cooling, water heating, laundry, ventilation, pumps, specialty appliances, shop tools, and future EV charging can shape circuit and service planning. Product specifications matter; a placeholder on a drawing cannot always answer the electrical question.

If equipment has not been selected, identify the likely category and possible alternatives. The team can then discuss what must be decided before rough-in and what flexibility can reasonably be preserved.

3. Design lighting in layers

General illumination is only one layer. Kitchens, bathrooms, offices, reading areas, closets, built-ins, and work surfaces benefit from task lighting placed where the work happens. Accent and decorative fixtures add depth, while dimming and scene control help the same room work at different times of day.

Discuss color temperature, fixture type, beam spread, cabinet integration, driver locations, and control zones—not just the number of ceiling lights. The goal is useful light without glare, dark work surfaces, or an “airport runway” of fixtures.

4. Walk through every switch and receptacle

Imagine entering and leaving each room, carrying groceries, approaching a bed, using a vanity, charging devices, cleaning floors, and arranging seasonal furniture. Mark likely switch locations, bedside controls, countertop devices, television and network areas, floor or furniture outlets, exterior receptacles, and places where a visible cord would undermine the design.

Controls should support real movement through the home. A remodel is an opportunity to simplify confusing multi-location switching and coordinate dimmers or smart controls without making basic operation dependent on a phone.

5. Review the panel and future loads

Added circuits and equipment should be considered as part of the whole electrical system. Review service capacity, panel condition and space, planned major loads, and other improvements that may follow the remodel. A panel upgrade is not automatically required, but it should not be discovered as a surprise after equipment is ordered.

Discuss foreseeable additions such as an EV charger, generator, hot tub, workshop, exterior kitchen, or future finished space. Preparing a pathway while walls are open may be practical even when the final equipment is not part of the current phase.

6. Coordinate before rough-in and verify before drywall

The electrician, homeowner, builder, cabinet team, designer, and other trades should resolve conflicts before installation whenever possible. Before drywall, walk the project again with current plans. Confirm fixture centers, cabinet dimensions, appliance locations, wall-mounted equipment, control heights, and any changes made in the field.

Photographs of open walls can be valuable for future reference, but they do not replace required inspections or project documentation. Keep product information, circuit decisions, and change approvals organized so the finish phase is not built on memory.

What to send for an electrical remodel consultation

  • Project address or general location within the service area.
  • Current plans, sketches, cabinet drawings, and fixture or appliance selections.
  • Photos of the rooms and closed electrical service equipment.
  • The construction schedule and expected rough-in date.
  • A list of future electrical improvements worth considering now.
