Start with the light you will use most often
Seasonal color is one reason homeowners consider permanent eave lighting, but most nights are not holidays. Decide first what the house should look like on an ordinary evening. A useful plan may include a warm white architectural scene, a lower-output late-night scene, and restrained accent lighting for selected roof sections.
White-light quality matters. Color temperature, brightness, spacing, and how the light washes the fascia or wall all affect whether the result feels architectural or overly bright. Controls should make the everyday setting easy to recall without rebuilding a scene every night.
Map the complete roofline
Walk the property and identify every eave, peak, dormer, inside corner, outside corner, transition, and section that may be visible from the street or outdoor living areas. Decide which elevations need lighting and where a deliberate stopping point will look natural.
A front-only system has different wiring and visual requirements than a continuous perimeter. Roof height, ladder access, landscaping, gutters, downspouts, snow and drainage paths, and future exterior work can influence equipment placement and installation sequencing.
Plan power, controls, and service access together
The visible lights are only one part of the system. Power supplies, controllers, connection points, wiring routes, and communication requirements need protected, serviceable locations. Concealing every component in an inaccessible cavity can make future diagnosis or replacement unnecessarily difficult.
The electrical plan should consider available circuits, control location, exterior exposure, listed equipment, manufacturer requirements, and a clean route that does not leave loose wiring across finished surfaces. If the system depends on an app or network connection, verify how control will work from the intended equipment location.
Think about the installation during daylight
A system can look excellent at night and distracting during the day if the track, fasteners, transitions, or wiring do not fit the fascia. Track color, mounting alignment, corner treatment, and the path between roof sections should complement the exterior finish.
Ask how the installation will navigate unusual roof details and where wiring will enter or leave the building. Clean planning is especially important around highly visible entries, patios, and low eaves.
Choose scenes with neighbors and the setting in mind
More output is not always better. Bright saturated color can be useful for special occasions, while lower-output white or subtle color often works better for daily use. Aim light where it is useful and avoid unnecessary glare into neighboring windows, streets, or the night sky.
Automation can make the system easier to live with. Timers, schedules, and a simple off routine prevent lighting from remaining at full output all night when that is not the homeowner's intention.

- Where can power and control equipment remain protected and serviceable?
- How should the system handle corners, gaps, additions, or future exterior changes?
- Who will configure schedules, scenes, and homeowner access after installation?
